Nature, Palaeoart, and Scientific Illustration

As well as being an illustrator, I have my academic background in science. I hold a BSc in Biology from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Sustainable Development from Uppsala University. In addition, I've also taken degree-level courses in palaeontology to strengthen my knowledge in this area. As such, I'm especially well-suited to scientific projects. Whether you're looking for detailed illustrations, simple scientific diagram, or child friendly cartoons, I have both the scientific and artistic skills to help.

Cartoons and Logos

As well as realism, I also enjoy drawing logos, cartoons and other more stylized work. This art style is especially well suited for children's illustrations

The Commission Process

The following images show the typical commission process. When producing a commission, I work very closely with the client asking for their feedback and approval on several key stages. This assures that the client receives exactly what they're after without the need for lengthy revisions. Click and scroll to see the images in more detail and compare between stages.

In the first image, the client has supplied me with a doodle to express their vision of the piece. While I also accept detailed written descriptions, a doodle, no matter how basic, really helps me to visualise exactly what they're envisaging. Based on a client's doodle, descriptions, or a mix of both, I produce the initial concept sketch, here shown to the right. The initial concept is extremely basic and mostly used to work through with the client the composition of the drawing.

Based on feedback from the initial concept, the concept is further refined to solidify pose. Once the pose is approved by the client, precise details are added.

Once the final sketch is approved by the client, the artwork moves into its colour phase. I lay down very rough colours for the client to approve the overall colour scheme. The general colouring style is decided before the commission process begins, in this case, a semi-realistic stylistic approach was selected. Once the colour scheme is approved, further basic details are added.

The colour detailing and texturing is by far the longest part of the process. The client receives several updates throughout to ensure they’re happy with progress. In a digital commission, final lighting details are usually added last. Once the client is satisfied, the commission is complete and ready to be sent.
